There is a very little chance that you have never heard about PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds or just PUBG for short. This title is literally everywhere – YouTube, Twitch, biggest game-related websites. And currently it is the most popular game on Steam. And it is not a MOBA like LoL or Dota 2 made by a huge gaming studio. Basically, it is an indie project developed by the small team led by Brendan Green who is also responsible for the popular mode Battle Royale for ArmA 3. The games in this relatively new genre are getting more interest among players. Green managed to follow this trend and unexpectedly created the hit so big that he just can’t believe his lucky guess.
What is PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds’ catch?
If we appeal to gaming genres, PUBS seems another multiplayer/shooter/online/survival/simulator game. Too many genres? Yes. Do they make the game original? Barely, since there are dozens of indie and AAA projects in these popular genres available on Steam. And still this project published by Bluehole studio (the Korean publisher and developer responsible for TERA) takes one milestone after another. The catch is simpler than you think – its gameplay is very addictive. 100 players land at different points of the island. The main goal is to collect the loot – useful staff (weapons, first-aid kits, etc) in order to prevail over players and kill them as soon as possible. Then the safe white zone appears, that constantly narrows during a match. Around the white zone there is a non-disappearing blue zone (the so-called exclusion zone) where a player gets damage all the time. Thus, players are constantly stimulated to take action, to move around the map. Also in PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds there is a red zone where bombs drop occasionally. The last surviving player or team wins.
You have a huge map, Basically, it is an emormous island with some small islands surrounding it and a big military base (look at the bottom of the screen). On the island there are many buildings. You can enter every building to hide or gather loot. The basic strategy can be like that – you open the house’s door, run and look at the floor in the search for weapons, ammo, bulletproof vest, first-aid kit, etc. The chance to get a good item is rather rare, so you have to roam around many buildings, then look for a backpack and go further. It is practically impossible to sit in one house during the whole match. The developer came up with a cool system of zones that motivates you to run forward. After picking up the weapons and increasing your character’s parameters (body armor, health kits, etc.), you are to find a vehicle – prepare that it will be very hard, sometimes practically impossible. Also, you can donate real money and buy paid boxes to find a better loot – the system of microtransactions is no worse than in CS: GO.
